A Democratic Fashion Process

I staged a little photo shoot in my parents' driveway so you can see my new swingy raincoat. I sort of love it, but worry that I don't have nearly enough chances to wear it to justify the purchase (Singapore + outer coverings = sweaty disaster). Shiny Squirrel reports that she returned hers immediately due to its overwhelming largeness. I'll put it up to a vote: What do you all think? Should it stay or should it go?

While I'm at it, you should know that not all my purchases in the U.S. have been vintage-related. Some have been budget shopping-related. Here's a few things I've stocked up on:

+Liz Lange maternity t-shirts, $9.99, Target. Now, I am not pregnant, nor have any plans to be anytime soon, but I really love these t-shirts, which I discovered last year. For starters, they come in an extra-long length (perfect, I suppose, for pregnant bellies, but also perfect if you are nearly six feet tall and have a very long torso and are sick of showing off stomach with regular tees. Which is me, in case that wasn't clear.)

Extra bonuses: They are way cheaper than American Apparel and they have a bit of lyrca in them, which means they hold up much better to near-constant washes than plain cotton.

+Patent leather(ish) flats, about $15, Payless. I grabbed a few pairs of these cheap little flats from Payless (added bonus: buy two pairs and the second is half-off). They sell near-identical pairs at Topshop, but for more than three times the price. Score!

+Flipflops, 2 for $5, Old Navy. I was coveting a pair of silver Havaianas in Singapore a few weeks ago, so I was more than happy to snap up very similar version -- in both light and dark silver -- at Old Navy this week. {Unfortunately not online, it seems.}

+New Keds! I have worn my Eleanor Grosch owls into the ground (they are starting to smell horribly, I'm sorry to say, though that hasn't really stopped me from getting a few last gasps out of them). Unfortunately, they no longer make the black owl model – I can't find them anywhere. I decided I wasn't feeling the pastel Eleanors as much, so went with the black and white stars instead. They're no black owls, but they're still pretty fun.

Also, can we just talk about how cute the Piperlime packaging is? It makes you even happier about your new shoe purchase. Well, that and the free shipping.

you are SO cute!

why, thank you. {blush.} but: is the *coat* cute?

I think that coat looks adorable on you, it's a cute style (if you're into looking sweet :)) Loved your black owls Keds, the new ones are okay too.

The coat would be much nicer with replacement buttons. Changing the cheesy plastic four-holed ones gives even mass-produced items a more unique look. Having said which, I'd agree that Singapore is not the place for this coat. The style is great, but somehow I feel the colour is making you look washed-out. Please excuse all the critiques. :)

hmmm... it IS an enormous amount of pale khaki.

I think if you want you can make it work, but I got it at my office and I asked a bunch of people and I got an overwhelming NO! It made me look like a house and it was a small. I opted out, but if you can pull it (I think if you wanted to you could) then by all means I say keep it!

Hope you are doing well!

I love the coat. You look adorable in it--it's very chic, I think.

Let me ask you--with the Liz Lange shirts, do you order your regular size? I've been dying to find long-enough tees, and your advice is, well, manna from heaven. :)

i get the small from liz lange, and i very nearly got the x-small. i'm usually a medium at (for example) the gap, so i'd say these run a little big.

i'd say keep it!!! its so cute... not to wear in singapore though... but if you travel alot where its much colder, why not? :)

Its cute on you, though certainly not for singapore! You'd sweat buckets in it and thats not so hot.

i just have to say this... there's finally someone else who appreciates $3.50 Old Navy flip-flops!!! there's such a myriad of colors that makes me wanna bring every one home, mine have lasted me for two years, their broader-based shape is so forgiving when you have bloated feet during that time of the month. they are AWESOME.

I am wearing 4 different pairs right now, and i have three pairs in storage. =)

Oh, but after some time, when the outsoles get worn out, they are really really not the best slippers on rainy days.

Back to the coat.

Keep it.

And if I had it, I would wear it in Singers. On dumpy rainy days, I would just pretend it's a rain coat. I would think nobody would raise a brow too, cos it does pass off as one.

Cool buy, girl!

the coat is cool, looks grat on the mode but was probably pinned back and altered to look less volumous in the catalog. I would send it back honestly. It's totaly something i would get and have the same problem witg. Clothes are not supose to engulf us. No offense to everyone else but I think they were looking at how great you could look in it, but a coat is something we just want to throw on and look good. right?

Hi there, Ms. Spinach!

Just wanted to say hi, I'm Annabelle, and I'm a new reader to your blog, although I've voraciously read through all the posts over the last few days. I'm a neighbour, hailing from over in Jakarta, Indonesia, and I wanted to say your blog inspired me to get started on my own little blog.

To the coat, I say I love it! However, it's not too well suited to the humidity of the tropics that we're forced to endure. It could work wonderfully on a rainy day though, so I'd hold on to it if I were you. =]

i'm gonna go with the minority on this and say nah to the coat. it's got that cute swingy shape, but seems a bit *too* voluminous. looks great in the first two pics, not so much in the third. and i don't like those front panels hanging down.

but if you keep it, i suggest a new hobby to keep you cool in the singapore weather: flasher! heh....

hmmmm I can't really decide. You're tall enough to pull it off and I think the sleeves are adorable. However I'm not loving the extra fabric at the top and how it bells out (see 3rd pic). I would definitely melt in that in Singapore, even on a cloudy day due to the humidity. If you can wear it on other trips and love it then keep. I think you totally rock it!

hmmm. i think i've decided to send it back. my current fashion philosophy is that if it's not totally awesome, then it's not worth it. (unless it is really cheap. but this is not.)

plus, the money can go back into my orla kiely bag fund!

think the coat overwhelms you too much. too biggg but cute!
