Now in Technicolor!

Tuesday, April 03, 2007

I'm completely inspired right now by the cheerfully colored works of Japanese artist Ryu Itadani, who I first discovered while browsing the fantastic gift shop at the new National Art Center in Tokyo a few weeks ago (I'm fairly positive museum shops are among the best shopping locations in the whole world, right after Barneys and the Wilmington, DE Goodwill). I love the vibrancy and detail of his work; it fits perfectly with my fashion mood these days.

There's a lot of stuff happening in fashion at the moment – just reading the style news regularly is enough to make your head spin (It's all about stripey monochromes! No, it's gray! No, it's vintage-inspired prints!). Personally, I have to say my current favorite looks are the pieces in bright, bold, super-saturated colors. Everytime I walk by Zara, I'm entranced by that daffodil-yellow cocktail dress {below} they're prominently displaying in the window right now (and I'm not the only one). It gets even better inside the store: I stopped in earlier this week and drooled over their lemony cropped trench coat, that slightly-ubiquitous-but-cute-nonetheless orange bell-sleeved coat and a fantastic sundress in the brightest shade of grass green. (Kind of like wearing a freshly mowed lawn, and I mean that in a good way. I love freshly mowed lawns!) And Singapore Topshop is now stocking that hot pink pinafore dress that I adore so much – it's just the most perfect, eye-popping, bubblegum pink. Sometimes, the fast fashion stores get it exactly right.

As further proof: Did you see the fantastic emerald green jacket Holly B. scored at H&M for $35? Say it with me: Oooooh.

One of the best things about fashion these days is that almost anything goes (anything except men in denim shorts. Please, for the love of God, please make all the men in your life stop wearing denim shorts!). I'm pretty much having a Dorothy-in-Technicolor-Oz kind of style moment myself, to which I say: Which way to the Emerald City? I think I'd like a little more bright green in my wardrobe.

Thank you for introducing the work of Ryu Itadani, I'm in love! Loving all the retro prints in the stores right now, forget grey and monochrome, I am going for the yellow ocre and turquoise look at the moment.
