DIY of the Week: Bangle bracelets

Remember a few summers ago when we all went out and bought those big plastic bangle bracelets in bright 80s colors? Ah… hindsight. However, I love a good, wide bangle, and was determined to give even my most garish ones another chance at a fashionable life. Here's how this works:
1) You'll need a sheet of patterned paper (I used Japanese origami paper, which can generally be found in arts & crafts shops), some basic white glue (or Modpodge) and a clean paintbrush.
2) Cut the paper into small strips, about 1cm wide and long enough to wrap around the width of the bracelet. You're going to need to have enough to cover the entire exterior of the bracelet, which is probably around 30 strips.
3) Brush a light layer of glue on the inside and outside of the paper and position on bracelet. Continue this and work your way around the exterior of the bracelet, slightly overlapping each piece. Coat the outside with more layers of glue to help the paper stick together seamlessly (you don't want to overdue it with the glue, but it will dry clear so you don't need to keep it too minimal either).
4) You'll probably want to do half the bracelet, then set it upright on its non-gluey end to dry before finishing the other half.
5) I gave mine another good coat of Modpodge Matte later to seal it so I wouldn't have to panic too much if I'm wearing the bracelets during one of Singapore's regular rainstorms. However, they're still not exactly rain- and spill-proof, so perhaps a spray of acrylic sealer would work better?
6) This seriously takes about 20 minutes, tops.
Voila. Instantly reinvented bangle bracelets. Cute, no?

so cute! i'm wondering how to apply this technique to something for the home as well. napkin rings?
totes cute. but i have none of these bangle bracelets you talk about. what can i do? i need to be crafty! or else i'm just pretending i want to be crafty. no matter what, glad to have you back.
you know, they *always* have old plastic bangle bracelets like these at thrift stores or cheapy accessories shops. (these were actually originally from the thrift store.) if you're really nice to me, i'll find you some the next time i'm home.
and holly! great idea. i do think these could totally be made into napkin rings. though... do people actually use napkin rings anymore? you're talking to a girl who has yet to find a dining room table and still eats her meals while sitting on the couch. sigh.
Hi there,
Just stumbled across your blog and I love it! This post in particular really grabbed my attention as it's such a fantastic yet simple idea.
I'll have to drag some of my more less than attractive bangles out and give this a go myself.
Thanks for the inspiration.
So cool - such a good idea!
I love this idea and your site!
Great idea! And I have a huge vat of Modpodge at home....
NO WAY! sooooooo cute! i don't think chunky bangles look good on me, due to the fact that I haven't exactly lost all of the baby fat on my upper arms (though I'm still waiting), but these would make such great gifts.
I have been wanting to make these bracelets for so long but can not find plastic bangles anywhere. I have searched endlessly online. Can anyone HELP?? Please!

Jenny, these are great! Seems we're both feelin the modgepodge love this weekend!
Now....I agree we don't wanna see our name with the 'do not accept check from....' Don't worry, Jenny, I'm quite sure it's mostly for people who live in houses resembling drug dealers' houses. You have nothing to worry about (hehe)
Came across your blog today. This is so weird, I have the exact origami papers you used! They're stashed somewhere in my bookshelf. Tis a sign to DIY. Anyway, love your blog.
