Huge (for us) for spring! Saddle shoes!

Thursday, March 06, 2008

I spotted this uniformed schoolgirl on the Metro yesterday, and I couldn't help but instantly notice her classically cool black and white saddle shoes. (At first I thought they were a fashion statement, but no, she was decked out in the whole plaid-uniform thing and seemed to actually be headed home from school.)

The shoes offer a unique, unexpected twist on the menswearish styles we've been seeing all year—and of course, I love their thoroughly 50s, ultra-retro appeal. (Even better, they're all over eBay at reasonable prices.) I'm sort of completely besotted.

{And yes, I totally pretended I was fiddling with my camera while secretly snapping a picture of her feet.}

I have had various saddle shoes my entire life. I was the only one wearing them in high school in the early 80s.

Now I'm of a certain age and I still have a pair, but I can't figure out a way for a 40-something yr old to wear them. Any ideas? I love librarian chic, and would like to wear them with a below the knee wool pencil skirt and sweater - sort of 1940s. But that would probably look pretty matronly on me now.

I was wearing saddle shoes in the 80's too. But I had no choice. They were part of the school uniform. Every Friday was shoe inspection day. If we were out of cleaner, White Out was the next best thing. Just brush over the dirty white area. The Sisters were not going to bend down and eye ball the shoe anyway.

I've done the fiddling-with-the-camera move too, don't worry ;D Was it my fault the girl had amazing shoes?

I'm another saddle shoe lover who used to wear them in the 80's as part of my school uniform. I still have several pair and try to find good opportunities to wear them whenever possible!
