Claudia Kishi, we salute you.
Blame Pretty Legit for sparking today's obsession: revisiting the outfits of Claudia Kishi. Oh, you don't know Claudia? She was the super-stylish, educationally challenged, Japanese-American member of The Babysitters Club, which I read devotedly (along with the antics of size six twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield from Sweet Valley High) throughout middle school.
Claudia may be one of my first fashion heroes; I can still vividly remember many of her stylishly wacky and thoroughly 80s outfit choices (I always applauded her originality and penchant for side ponytails, but never mustered the nerve to rock such looks in suburban Delaware). Still, I've got to admit that I've really been enjoying this trip down memory lane. {Maybe a little *too* much. I'm forcing myself to resist the temptation to dig out my old BSC collection from the depths of my parents' basement.}
Of course, it should probably be pointed out that Pretty Legit, who is still in college, and I, who is definitely waaay out of college, idolized two different Claudias. Sure, the descriptions inside the books are the same, but it's the covers that really cement your mental images and I barely recognized the Claudia illustrations of later years. I had a hard time digging up pictures from the earliest editions of BSC, but managed to find enough for this little recap.
I also grabbed some choice outfit descriptions straight from the books from the Claudia section of a BSC blog. Let's see what Claudia's been wearing, and let's remember, this was the 80s and early 90s. There are, not surprisingly, a lot of oversized hair barrettes going on.
*"I thought I'd start with my lucky earrings--the ones that look like Princess Di's. They're huge (pretend) emeralds, surrounded by thousands of tiny (phony) diamonds. Then I thought I'd work downward from there, wearing my new green-and-blue-tie-dyed T-shirt dress (the casualness of the dress would be an interesting contrast to those fancy earrings) over green leggings."
*"She decides to dress crazy and thematically, like Ms. Frizzle (from the Magic School Bus books). Her outfit? 'I decided my theme for the day would be The Sea. I put on a blue skirt with brightly colored tropical fish printed all over it. Then I put on a green blouse. I figured that could represent seaweed or something. I pulled my hair into a ponytail, over to one side, and I pinned it with a sand-dollar barrette I made last summer.' And she wears jellies with sea-type stickers all over them."
*"Staring back at me was a medium-height Japanese-American girl with almond-shaped eyes and long, black hair held back by a pink, star-shaped barrette. She wore a silky pink tank top with a man's white shirt tied casually over it, white jeans, and flip-flops decorated with more pink stars."
*"That afternoon, for instance, I was wearing a man's paisley vest I'd found at a yard sale, over a striped button-down shirt with tuxedo-stripe black Spandex stirrup pants, held up with pink-flecked black suspenders. My hair was pulled straight back with a paisley comb, and I was wearing electric-pink ankle boots. The boots really set off the formality of the rest of the outfit, sort of like the punchline of a joke."
*“It was a big, loose white shirt with black splotches all over it, and white pants that came to just below my knees. My shoes (and I might point out that I’d had a fight with Mom over permission to buy them) were dainty gold sandals that laced partway up my legs. Then I put on my pink flaming earrings and a pink bracelet that said CLAUDIA in heart shaped beads. Finally I braided my hair into four long braids, tied a ribbon around the top of each, and fastened the ends with butterfly clips.”
Not enough? There's an entire blog devoted to recapping every one of Claudia's ensembles, book by book.
I stopped reading the series sometime around book #40 or so, so I'm not quite sure whatever became of Claud and her impressive wardrobe. But I bet if Claudia Kishi were all grown up, she'd totally be rocking some Viktor & Rolf, and some Margiela and Yohji Yamamoto too.

Ms Spinach, you are making me feel so nostalgic here! I used to binge read them when I was growing up too... Claudia really did stand out as the 'fashionable' one :) I remember she brought mascara even to summer camp. Haha.
Amazing! I didn't know other people idolised Claudia Kishi as much as I did!
Holy crap... SO weird to read that again after like 20 years!!! I loved Claudia the most, and even remember some of those outfits described. I don't think I realized how detailed Ann M. Martin was the descriptions. Thanks for reminding me of these! I'm SO digging mine out next time I'm at my parents...
I am loving the trip down BSC memory lane everyone seems to be on right now! :D
My youth! I love Claudia, but Stacey was my fav. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Aaaw...the memories! Claudia was my hero! She was so arty...a total individual. I was reading in the early-mid 90s, but funnily I don't really remember the covers much. The one thing I do remember is that she used to do that paintbrush in the hair thing...so cool for a pre-teen girl!
Yes! Ms. Spinach - I salute you for being the first one in the blogosphere (I think!) to point out the fashion inspiration that is Claudia Kishi!
first of all love your blog. second of all totally agree Claudia did have the best style. one of the first style icons that emerged from books
Nope, not the first... I wish!
To be fair, I also really enjoyed Stacey's NY fabulousness and Dawn's laid-back California style too. {I am thisclose to pulling out those books when I'm back in DE next weekend!}
wow what a trip down memory lane! I completely forgot all about these books, I think I read right into the 100s! I didn't even know what mascara was until Claudia told me :)
i had such a ridiculous girlcrush on her when i read the book. she was my favorite--stacy was too much of a skank.
ohmy, i didn't know that there were babysitter club books! the movie was my absolute favorite.
It took a serious amount of restraint to keep myself from buying 3 BSC books I found on a bargain book table a couple of weeks ago. Glad to hear I'm not alone on my nostalgic love of these books.
*scream*
I LOVED BSC! And Claudia was always my favourite... I even used to hide junk food in my room like her.
i loved BSC too! i liked everyone's style but Claudia was the one who just stood out more. thank you thank you for bringing us back down memory lane!

this is GENIUS.
I'm so happy I stumbled upon this blog! I loved Claudia's outfits... that was one of my favorite parts about reading the babysitter's club books. She can be an inspiration to us all... I wish I had some electric pink ankle boots.
oh! I used to be crazy about the babysister's club. I'd watch the show and everything!
spread the love :)
I suppose you need to give your fans/readers more posts and less photo captions. I'm saving the tears I'm crying right now to water a brightly colored memory garden I'm planting in honor of FisS alttags. So long! Farewell! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmwwwwwwhhhhaaaaaaaaaa.
Brilliant post!
Claudia was always my favorite BSC girl. Besides her side ponytails, I love that she stashed candy in her room and always ate it in front of her diabetic best friend. What a bad-ass!
A lot of it was the super-high ponytails! Back in the days, you had to be confident to pull of that 'edgy' look.
She was my favourite too! I read the BSC in Dutch, so 'Claudia' was called 'Joke' (it's a real girls' name here, meaning "little Jo"). I wonder if they rewrote her outfits too - I don't recognize these descriptions, but I still remember suspenders and bowties though. I also had a phase where I started making my own jewellery like she did. Aah, memories :)
Wow! This is fantastic!! What a fabulous trip down memory lane; hard to believe how long it's been since I idolized Claudia... and Kristy... I was such an admirer of Dawn's long blond hair. Claudia's fashion sense almost seemed intimidating it was so cool at the time.
Thanks so much for sharing; now for a visit to my parents' basement to dig up my 40-odd books plus super specials! ;)

oh my gosh! I bought a fedora because of claudia kishi! I didn't get much use out of it-- I think an episode of blossom killed it for me.
wow, this really takes me back. I couldn't understand why my middle-school life was never quite as glamorous as these girls'. I always wondered how Claudia had SO many clothes all the time. Now I'm also tempted to go dig all my old books up, but I think reading them now would probably ruin their mystique...
Thanks for totally taking me back!!! :) I forgot about this. Goodness, all you need is Little House & The Prairie, and Nancy Drew!!! haha
I never thought about them again since this post! Such great books, haha xxx
