On the Street With Bill Cunningham

Sunday, April 03, 2011

It has been a long time since I've seen anything as marvelous (that's mah-vell-us, in Bill-speak) as Bill Cunningham New York, the documentary about the longtime street fashion/social circuit photographer for the New York Times. Bill himself is just wonderful, and the cast of originals who know him — Editta Sherman and Iris Apfel, for starters — add that much more amazingness to the film. Already, I can't wait to see it again. It's just opened nationwide, and really: You must go.

AGREED!!! I finally saw it today and I was so enchanted.

Sitting in the theater at Film Forum, watching this celebration of one of the city's great characters (and brilliant voices!) I felt like I fell in love with NYC all over again. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie and felt like my perspective on the world had shifted a little. Bill has shot some of the fundraising events I've run -- I'm glad he deemed our cause worthy enough!
