L is for the Way You Look at me…

Sunday, September 23, 2007

I still have about five more posts on Paris (including a detailed description of the best new slouchy boots), but I'm interrupting them for a moment to post the Coco Mademoiselle video, which I saw for the first time on TV last night during the commercial break for The Bourne Identity (actually, it came on twice during the first 30 minutes, before I retired to my bed to watch the pilot of Gossip Girl, which you can download free on iTunes and which – surprise, surprise – I seriously loved. But I digress.)

Anyway, the launch of this Coco Mademoiselle commercial was one of the reasons we were all invited to Paris; we sat in artistic director Jacques Helleu's office and watched it (no joke) four times together at all its various lengths, dissecting every little detail (Why does she look a little sad at the end? What was the decision behind the Joss Stone song?). Truth be told, at the time I was a little meh about it – I thought it was okay, but it all seemed somewhat intensely overdone, so much so that it eclipsed the airy lightheartedness it was trying to convey. But actually, when it came on TV last night, it was just perfect – a breezy, distinctive, instantly noticeable song and a lush, detailed little film amidst the otherwise humdrum mix of shampoo commercials. Shows you what I know about advertising.

Actually, I think the only thing that really bothers me about this commercial is (and we're going to get nitpicky here) the dangling diamond necklace that hangs over the top of the higher-necked dress. I have very ingrained views on how necklaces and formal dresses should go together, and every time I see this, I was to yell (as I imagine Karl might), "No! No! No! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!"

Am I crazy to think a diamond choker would be a better fit with this dress? Or that a plungy v-neck would be a better fit with this necklace? It's annoyingly distracting to me.

Warning: The Joss Stone tune will get into your head, and it will rattle there incessantly until someone around you starts singing Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" and then that will plague you for a good 3-4 days.

Also note: Gossip Girl! I'm seriously hooked, if only for the fashion. Serene's slouchy-yet-sophisticated ensembles are infinitely copyable. In fact, I'm planning on channeling her striped tee, men's vest, and shorts action today.

Final note: Is it wrong that I am getting fashion inspiration from a show on the CW?

Yes to Gossip Girl! Some of the other girls have cute stuff too - the girl who first saw Serena at Grand Central? I love her scarf!

I'm in love with this commercial but I do agree with you on the dress and necklace. Thought that dress (though in a nice red) didn't really cut it. It should have been a really flirty, short and fun dress to go with the upbeat rhythm of Joss Stone's L.O.V.E. Plus Keira Knightly is young, so she can totally look the part.

That song is great; I have been humming it non-stop!

oooh... the reminds me: fun story about karl and the red dress in the next post!

Am I the only one? I did not find the necklace and dress unsuitable for each other. A plunging neckline would have work just as well but this red dress is alright too. A short flirty dress in 1920s flapper style would be nice.

The song was a bit too noisy for me. A fresh take on the classic song nevertheless but the song wasn't what I expect to accompany the visuals.

not to worry! i fully admit i have weird jewelry-neckline beliefs. i just hate an awkward overlap. (hmmm... or maybe i just don't like that necklace.)

however, i do like debate! (even if it's about something as trivial as necklaces and necklines!) vote away!

I love Keira! Thanks for this post. I thought the dress was cut brilliantly and it matches up to the previous dresses in Chanel ads like Nicole's 5.

totally agree with you on the necklace. :)

After watching the commercial 5 times, I think I like only the necklace. They should have put her in a v-neck, flapper dress with a standout accessory like that.

You know the necklace DID bother me at first, but after looking at the photo for a little bit longer, the neckalce and dress kinda go well together. In fact, I cant picture a better substitute. LOL!

Hi, I love your blog!

I didn't really think much of the necklace until the last shot, and then I really didn't like seeing it bounce around on the red. For some reason it reminds me of my childhood, or the 80's.

Thanks for the Singapore shopping info you have on your blog; I'm going for National Day next week and so excited to have the insight of someone living there!

you know... i agree with you about the commercial. the only thing special about it, is a celebrity.. meh... there is nothing unique or interesting about the whole thing. the commercial from a branding perspective doesn't really convey why chanel is so cool. paris is nice, but by the looks of the commercial, it looks cliche.

as far as the necklace, i agree. if they had to fit diamonds with that dress, they should have gone with earrings.

and last but not least...why not cw? for years, i hung off ever buffy the vampire slayer episode. gosh, i miss that show. campy but cute.

I HATE the necklace/dress combo, its just not kosher!

And gossip girl is fantastic, I'm so into it. I especially love a show that is actually filmed in NYC and not on an LA set trying to look like the big apple.
